Farmers on several Aegean islands such as Samos extensively apply the herbicide Roundup to their fields to cull any plants that compete with their crops for nutrients, light and water. Roundup enters a plant via the leaves and spreads throughout the organism, penetrating its cells and inhibiting the production of proteins that are essential for its survival.

While Roundup’s protein disruption…

In love with the sandy beaches, sheltered bays, coastal caves and coastal wetlands of the Greek islands? Treasure them while they are still there. Until the maritime safety of the Aegean improves, these stunning islands can be wiped out anytime.

The figures from European Maritime Safety Agency have shown in 2010 that the Aegean Sea has the highest shipping accidents risk…

In the last couple of years, there has been an enormous explosion in electronic and IT applications. The possibilities in biological research have evolved at the same pace. Archipelagos tries to integrate these possibilities in their research, because they can drastically expand their conservation efforts. I am a Bachelor in Mechanical and Electronic Engineering and next year I will start…

a meadow of Posidonia oceanica

As a member of the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Team of Archipelagos, I have had the privilege to work with other motivated interns here on the protection and monitoring of Posidonia oceanica, an endemic species of seagrass that can be found in the Mediterranean Sea.  As a core task of Archipelagos, this study of seagrass is…

As part of Archipelagos’ Agronomy Team, I am working on a project researching the regeneration of bean (Phaseolus) seeds in Archipelagos’ seed bank collection.

The seeds are stored in an environment with little moisture and temperature to increase their longevity. Their viability, or healthiness, decreases slowly during the first years then more quickly during the following years. Their regeneration must be…

Three out of seven known sea turtle species can be found regularly in Mediterranean Sea – loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea).  Sea turtles spend majority of their lives in the sea, but females come to land in order to nest. They crawl out of the sea during the night and lay…

Forest fire in the Mediterranean is one of the most common forms of disturbance in the area, due to both anthropogenic and natural causes.  In addition to the dry Mediterranean climate and the flammable vegetation in the area, the Mediterranean is a high-trafficked tourist site, in which anthropogenic fires often start. Recovery of the forest ecosystems after a fire is…

The Archipelagos Law and Policy Team is engaged in ongoing efforts to promote legal mechanisms and enforcement methods that will improve maritime traffic conditions and collision prevention in the Aegean Sea region.  The team’s work principally seeks to address these issues at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), European Union (EU), and International levels.

An area of particular relevance to the project…
